TRACING FUTURE is a projection mapping proposal, depicting the melting process of glaciers due to Global Warming. It is planned to be a projection that will be approximately 10 minutes long, running in loops, which will be implemented on the rock formations in two locations in Skagaströnd, on the sea and on the land.

The aim is to point out the physical impact of the Climate Crisis, making use of the geographical landscape of Skagaströnd, ICELAND.

The proposed installation will not only be an immersive experience but also a tool to raise global awareness to climate crisis.

As stated by the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, “The era of global warming has ended, the era of global boiling has arrived”. A global action plan has to be set and followed immediately, without any exceptions.

According to Global Footprint Network, Earth Overshoot Day shifted to 29th of July in year 2023. This means that humanity is currently using 1.75 times faster than the planet’s ecosystems can regenerate, as stated in the Journal of Petroleum Technology.

Although our perception of Climate Change seems far away, as of August 2023, we have approximately 5 years and 347 days to act to limit Global Warming to 1.5°C, to shift our priorities to change the future.

Iceland is one of the fastest warming places on the planet as per WWF’s reports. If emissions continue to rise unchecked, the Arctic could be

ice-free in the summer by 2040. Okjokull Glacier has already been destroyed following the latest recorded heatwave in July 2019 and the others are still in danger. We would like to take this opportunity of the Light Up festival to raise global awareness in this area.

The production process is divided into 2 sections;

Research and Data Collection

The local nature patterns in Skagaströnd, including neighbouring settlements will be studied and recorded. Footages from the ocean, mountains, green lands and air will be collected and developed during the Video Production Period.

Video Production

Melting process of a block of ice, will be recorded in real time and will be juxtaposed with the visuals of local patterns that have been gathered during the Research and Data Collection period, resulting in the final graphics that will be projected during the festival.
